Behind The Brand

Scented HK

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Stacey and I’m from Scotland. I originally moved to Hong Kong 8 years ago, spent 3 years in Japan, and then moved back to HK last year. I am a teacher by trade, and currently taking some time out from teaching to raise my baby. I love to travel, spend time with family and friends, drink coffee, and spend summer days by the pool!

What made you start your company?

I have always loved candles, wax melts, and anything cozy. I had been wanting to learn how to make my own candles for a while, but never had the time with my demanding teaching job. I had a baby last November, so with the extended maternity leave, I decided to take the leap and start my own business amongst the baby snuggles!

Tell me about your product and brand?

Scented HK is a Hong Kong based company that makes unique, decorative, soy candles and wax melts. We have a variety of different scents to suit everyone’s taste. At Scented HK, we are committed to sustainability. The wax we use is completely natural, vegan friendly, cruelty free and paraben free. All of our packaging can be reused and/or recycled. Customers looking for a special, handmade gift can check out our range of  candles and wax melts!

What struggles have you faced when starting up a business?

I started this company when my baby hit 4 months, so it can be a struggle to find that work/life balance at times. I believe that social media plays such a big part in getting your products out there, so I have found keeping up with that side of the business tricky!

How did you get over them?

Every Sunday evening I make a business plan for the week – this includes things such as writing down ideas for social media posts, scheduling time to try out new products, ordering materials, etc. It gives me time to focus on building my business.

Any advice for others just getting started?

My advice for others who are just getting started would be to make sure it’s something you are really passionate about! It takes a lot of hours to start up your own business, so it’s important that you enjoy what you are working on. Also, following similar accounts on Instagram for inspiration and support has been so useful! Don’t be afraid to ask questions to those more knowledgeable.

Do you have a favourite quote?

My favourite quote would have to be: “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” Challenging hurdles and experiences can give the best lessons in life!
