Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born and raised in the Netherlands. I studied marketing in university and as part of my study I have done several exchanges in different countries in Asia. During my exchange in Hong Kong I fell in love with the city and it never occurred to me that I would get a job in the city back in 2012. I love going out with friends and meeting new people, and I am always in the mood for a good conversation or a drink. If the weather is good I like to go outdoors and you can often find me in the outskirts of the city wandering around in nature.

What made you start your company?

Covid! Like me, people are staying home more than ever now. I missed going out for a drink, and saw there were no good solutions available to do wine tasting at home. I want people to have the complete wine tasting experience even when they are at home with no sommelier around. Tasty Grapes comes with food pairing recommendations, history and details of the winery at the back of our box, so to some extent it’s like the sommelier is standing next to you. Everyone can be their own sommelier!

Tell me about your product and brand?

We love wine and the idea of no fuss wine tasting and Tasty Grapes is all about that. Tasty grapes offer various types of wine in tubes in different boxes that have different themes – Red, White, a mix of red and white and there is a chocolate version, so there is something for everyone.

There are so many wineries and types of wine in the world and why limit yourself drinking the same one over and over again. We really want people to explore the world of wine. That’s why all our wine is in tubes- single serving size. If you like them, great! We are happy that we helped you find the right wine for you. If you don’t, now you know and can move on to the next tube!

What struggles have you faced when starting up a business?

Literally everything. Starting up a business is extra hard especially since I am not a resident here, I don’t speak the language. I encountered so many difficulties in so many scenarios that you can’t possibly imagine. From Visa application to logistics, I am so happy everything is on track now.

How did you get over them?

I would often say, ‘Man up!’ to myself and just do it. Luckily my friends were very supportive throughout the journey and they gave me a lot of useful advice. Tasty grapes wouldn’t be here without them.

Any advice for others just getting started?

I think the advice is very simple. Just do it! If you never try you never know. It’s better to regret something you did, than regret something you didn’t do!

Do you have a favourite quote?

It’s not really a quote, but it’s a small story that really stuck in my mind. I don’t think it needs any explanation.

“A farmer is sitting on his porch in a chair, hanging out. A friend walks up to the porch to say hello, and hears an awful yelping, squealing sound coming from inside the house. “What’s that terrifying’ sound?” asks the friend. “It’s my dog,” said the farmer. “He’s sittin’ on a nail.” “Why doesn’t he just sit up and get off it?” asks the friend. The farmer deliberates on this and replies: “Doesn’t hurt enough yet.”
