Behind The Brand

The Boiis Co

Tell us a bit about yourself

We are the Boiis Co – there’s 3 co-founders. We have Aaron Troy Ortega, Kert Lasdoce, and Rivy-Major Oponda. We’re all Filipinos and we came from a restaurant and hospitality background of over 5 years.

What made you start your company?

Kert and Aaron started out with this concept as a passion project. Rivy-Major joined a few months later and officially launched the business together in October 2019.

Tell me about your product and brand?

We are an all filipinx owned mochi based dessert shop. Our first ever product was Tofu Mochi Bites. Then we made Mochi filled Cookies a.k.a Mooks. And we released our newest mochi dessert yet, Basque Mochi Cheesecake. We incorporate our Filipino flavors into our goodies.

What struggles have you faced when starting up a business?

Financials, Creating a network and finding a supportive community.

How did you get over them?

For financials, I believe that it’s hard to see profit not until a year later. So sacrifice definitely comes into play and just keeps going. Creating a network requires you to put yourself out there to get your business and brand known. From this, it has led us to a supportive community such as @project_barkada.

Any advice for others just getting started?

It sounds cliche, but once you start on something – never give up. Keep going if you keep your mind to it.

Do you have a favourite quote?

This is one of the quotes our friends came up with that kind of pushed us too actually. “You will meet people that will draw and outline endlessly, but it’s rare to meet people that will color them in.” meaning – many people can start ideas, but it’s rare for people to actually push through and make it happen.
